Volunteering is a great way to meet new people and serve your community. Habitat has several ways to get involved!

CONSTRUCTION SITE VOLUNTEER

Volunteering on the work site is a fun, hands-on opportunity for individuals and groups to build homes alongside future Habitat homeowners. No experience is necessary to volunteer on a construction job site. Our staff and skilled volunteers will teach you everything you need to know! If you are skilled in certain areas, let us know and we will discuss the possibility of you being a volunteer Crew Leader or House Leader.

Construction volunteers do carpentry, roofing, siding, interior trim, painting, and landscaping. Construction is led by our experienced construction team and new volunteers also receive coaching from more experienced volunteers.

Call us at (859) 625-9208 to learn more about construction schedules and volunteer opportunities at build sites and the ReStore!

RESTORE VOLUNTEER

Volunteer tasks at ReStore may include things such as running the cash register, assisting customers, moving inventory from the warehouse to the sales floor, cleaning furniture, or an array of other things.

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old to work on the ReStore, but there are often opportunities for younger volunteers with parental supervision. All volunteers must sign a liability waiver and the volunteer work log. Liability waiver forms are available here.

YOUTH VOLUNTEER INVOLVEMENT

Habitat depends on the work of volunteers, and we love having young volunteers!

Depending on their age and ability kids can be involved in various volunteer activities at the Habitat for Humanity of Madison & Clark Counties.

Even children 13 year or even can volunteer helping us raise awareness about the importance of affordable housing in our community. These youngsters can construct or paint bird houses which are sold at the ReStore, help with Aluminium can drives or fundraisers, color the envelopes we send out home-ownership application in, help with clean-up after the site is construction-free.

Youth 14-15 years of age can help in a limited capacity on the construction site performing a variety of tasks such as painting, landscaping, sponsoring activities such as car washes, recycling, walk-a-thons, etc.; and in the ReStore by assisting customers, sorting items, cleaning, setting up displays, and a variety of other tasks.

And youth 16-17 years of age can help in an even more expanded capacity by being present on active construction sites and in the taking on greater responsibilities at the ReStore. For an expanded lists of age-appropriate volunteer activities refer to the Youth Involvement Booklet

The benefits go both ways as volunteering has been found to have the positive impact on the emotional and social well being of youngsters. These include:

1. Youth who volunteer just one hour or more a week are 50% less likely to abuse alcohol, cigarettes, become pregnant, or engage other destructive behavior.

2. Teens say the benefits received from volunteering are: Learning to respect others; learning to be helpful and kind; learning to understand people who are different; developing leadership skills, becoming more patient, and better understanding of citizenship.

3. Youth who volunteer are more likely to do well in school, graduate and vote.
